Billie Holiday and the Carl Van Vechten portraits
Recently, I pleasantly stumbled upon an archive of thousands of photographs from the Beinecke Library at the Yale University website taken by a white patron of the Harlem Renaissance, Carl Van Vechten. Not only do they capture many of the household names from during and after the cultural movement, such as W.E.B. Du Bois, James Earl Jones, Billie Holiday, Langston Hughes, and Eartha Kitt, but they are stunningly presented in bright and soulful color. It really brings to life many of those whom I admire; it is as if I could one day see them walking down the street, although these were taken between 70 and 50-years-ago! It’s ironic that a man like Van Vechten, in/famous for setting the imperial gaze of the white exoticizing world onto Harlem with his idiotically titled book Nigger Heaven, would contribute to the photographic preservation of the magnificent spirit of such great black women and men. Unfortunately, in a racist world, those with racial power and privilege are allowed to tell the stories of the marginalized, even if the latter are better-educated and more awe-inspiring than the former. The reverse rarely, if ever, happens. This inspires me to continue to record and redefine the experiences of the beautiful Boricua diaspora and to agitate others to do so as well.

Not your average Cinderella story
His signature move was his ability to freeze an opponent with a crossover dribble, then blow past him toward the basket, lobbing the ball off the backboard and catching it and dunking it with one hand. It became known simply asa Hargett.

Aly Raisman’s gold medal winning floor exercise to Hava Nagila.
It is always nice when floor exercise music is easily recognizable, but this selection had a special punch considering the controversial lack of a moment of silence for the Israeli athletes killed in the 1972 Munich games. Aly has said “Having that floor music wasn’t intentional, but the fact it was on the 40th anniversary is special, and winning the gold today means a lot to me.” This is the cover of today’s New York Post, the tabloid style paper the provided the quote above.
Aly is the first American woman to win gold on the floor exercise. In the US, you can see her routine here.
